“Dormition of the Theotokos Icon” Archive Boxy Tee

Description

The WW9 “Dormition of the Theotokos Icon” Archive Boxy Tee

Rest. Grief. A mother carried home.

The Dormition, or “falling asleep,” of the Theotokos commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary, a major feast in Orthodox churches celebrated on August 15 (August 28 on the Julian calendar). In the traditional icon, Mary lies on a bier surrounded by the apostles, while Christ stands behind her holding her soul, shown as a small swaddled child. Many versions, like this one, also show the apostles arriving on clouds. The age, maker and origin of this particular icon are not known.

The front of the shirt carries the full icon as a rectangular image, with Christ in a mandorla above the bier and the apostles and angels gathered around, printed in full color with DTG.
