In the icons we carry, Jesus is painted melanated, a man of the Jordan Valley.
Five of our icon pieces carry him. In the Ascension he rises in gold inside a ring of glory. In the Baptism he stands brown-skinned in the Jordan. In Our Lady of the Sign and the Burning Bush he is the Child held at his mother's heart. In the Dormition he stands over her bier, holding her soul. A Galilean preacher under Roman rule, crucified around 30 to 33 CE, painted again and again with dark skin by the hands that made these icons.
