Virgin Mary

In the icons we carry, Mary is a Black Madonna: face and hands deep brown, the gold and robes still bright. Soot doesn't choose.

Three of our pieces carry her. On Our Lady of the Sign she stands in a red robe on a field of gold, arms raised, face and hands deep brown, with the Christ Child in a circle at her heart. On the Burning Bush she sits at the center of an eight-pointed star, ringed by scenes of saints and prophets. In the Dormition she lies at rest on her bier while her Son holds her soul. The Mother of God, held high in red and gold.
