Denzil Dowell's face is on the first front page the Black Panthers ever printed.
Our piece is that front page in black ink: THE BLACK PANTHER, Volume 1, Number 1, April 25, 1967, the panther on the masthead and the question in bold: WHY WAS DENZIL DOWELL KILLED. His photo sits on the right, a young man in a hat, hand raised to his face. Below it, a call to the people of North Richmond to meet and stand with his family. Denzil was 22. On April 1, 1967, a sheriff's deputy shot him dead. On that page his mother said it plain: she believed the police murdered her son. The Party answered with a newspaper. The question is still in print.
