Description
The WW9 “Jardin d’Acclimatation Caraïbes Poster” Archive Boxy Tee
Displayed. Exploited. Never forgotten.
The Jardin d’Acclimatation, a park in Paris that opened in 1860, staged so-called “ethnological exhibitions” from 1877 into the early twentieth century, in which people from Africa, the Americas and elsewhere were put on display for paying visitors. Historians now call these shows human zoos. This poster advertises one such exhibition of Carib (Kalinago) people, billed as “Caraïbes”; its exact year isn’t confirmed here.
The front of the shirt reproduces the poster in full color: the red “Jardin d’Acclimatation” and “Caraïbes” lettering, a standing man in feathered dress and beads, and scenes of the people on display, printed with DTG.
The Canvas:
This unisex boxy tee is made from 100% combed cotton (280g/m²). The heavyweight fabric gives the shirt a substantial vintage feel, while the drop shoulders and loose, boxy cut give a relaxed fit. Reactive-dyed for long-lasting color.
