Paris put melanated people of the Americas on display, and sold tickets.
Our piece is the poster that sold the show, in red and gold: JARDIN D'ACCLIMATATION across the top and CARAÏBES in the middle. A man stands tall on the left in a feathered crown, a necklace of teeth and beads, his body painted in red lines, a woven basket in his hand. Behind him, dancers in feathers file across the ground, a woman sits in her own crown, and families gather around a pot with their children. From 1877 this Paris park staged "ethnological exhibitions," with people from Africa and the Americas put on view for paying crowds. Today they're called human zoos. They were people, not a show. Remember them.
