Our Thành Thái piece comes from Huế, seat of the Nguyễn emperors from 1802 to 1945. France took the country piece by piece between 1858 and 1885 and split it into Tonkin, Annam and Cochinchina. The emperors kept their palace and lost their power, and some of them fought to get it back.
