On this stamp, the women of Guinea stand darkskin and crowned in their own braids.
Our piece is the whole stamp, perforations and all, in sepia and mauve: three faces in profile, the woman at the center with her hair built high in a crest of braids, rows of beads at her neck and a cloth over her shoulder. AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE FRANÇAISE runs around the frame, with RF and GUINÉE across the top, 20f in the corner and the engraver's name, Decaris, at the bottom. France ruled Guinea as part of French West Africa. In 1958 Guinea was the only colony to vote no to staying with France, and it walked out free that October.
