Guatemala's first stamps chose an autochthonous woman as the face of the nation.

Our medio real piece is all green: a woman in a feathered headdress and a string of pearls, framed in an oval with CORREOS DE GUATEMALA across the top. Guatemala put her on its stamps in 1878, decades after breaking from Spain in 1821. Maya land, and an Indigenous face on the nation's mail.
