Thành Thái's portrait shows a brown-skinned king who would not be a puppet.
Our piece is a vintage postcard portrait: a young emperor in a round court hat with medals on his chest, his reign name in red characters down the side and an old French stamp still fixed in the corner. Thành Thái took the throne of Vietnam in 1889 at about ten years old, under French control. He pushed back, so the French called him insane and forced him out in 1907. Exiled with his son Duy Tân after the 1916 uprising, he came home in the end and died in Saigon in 1954.
