In the icon on our piece, John the Baptist is a melanated prophet, brown-skinned at the Jordan.
On our Baptism piece he stands on the left bank in a dark cloak, haloed, reaching over Christ in the water. A prophet of the wilderness who called people to the Jordan to be washed clean. He spoke against a king, Herod Antipas, and lost his head for it. The icon keeps his face brown.
