Our piece is bright on black: the archangel in a striped green robe and a red cloak, wings spread, a sword raised in one hand and the scales in the other. His face is deep brown, his eyes wide, his hair a dark round crown inside a gold halo. Under his boots the devil burns in orange flames, winged and grey-faced. In Christian tradition, Michael leads the armies of heaven and casts down the dragon, and his scales weigh souls at the end of days. Painter and date unknown.
