In this icon, Christ and John are both painted melanated, brown-skinned in the river.
Our piece shows the whole scene: Christ standing in the Jordan in a white cloth, John at his side, angels waiting on the far bank, and a burst of light above where the dove comes down. The Eastern church calls it Theophany, the day God appeared, and keeps it on January 6, or January 19 on the old calendar. Heaven open, water blessed, and every face in it brown.
