1887–1954 / Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos

French rule was resisted by brown-skinned kings and people alike.

Our Thành Thái piece is a postcard from this era, with a French stamp still stuck in the corner. France stitched Vietnam and Cambodia into one colony in 1887 and added Laos in 1893. Emperors who obeyed kept the throne. Emperors who resisted, like Thành Thái, were deposed and exiled. It took a war to end it, in 1954.
