Blaxploitation put Black faces at the center of the screen.
Our Black Belt Jones piece is a still from the heart of it: Jim Kelly and Gloria Hendry side by side, fists up, 1974. Starting with Shaft and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song in 1971, Hollywood let Black heroes lead, win and walk away cool. Critics called some of it stereotype. The audiences came anyway, because they finally saw themselves winning.
