Baroque courts put melanated figures at the center of their treasure.
Our Emerald Indian piece was made at the height of it, in Dresden around 1724: a carved figure covered in gold, silver and gems, holding up a tray of emeralds. Baroque meant drama, movement and wealth on display, from about 1600 to 1750. Europe's courts made dark-skinned figures the centerpieces of their treasure, in gold, in ebony and in lacquer.
