His skin is deep black against gold, silver and emeralds: a highly melanated king of the Americas.
Our piece shows him from the front and the back in black and white: a dark figure about two feet tall, feathered crown, jeweled armor and skirt, holding up a tray of raw emeralds. He was made in Dresden around 1724, credited to the court jeweler Johann Melchior Dinglinger and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser. Europe called him a Moor. His feathers point to the Americas, where the emeralds came from.
