Four Black heads sit at the heart of Sardinia's arms: Moors, set in a European crest.
Our piece is the old coat of arms: a white shield split by a red cross, a dark Moor's head in each corner with a white band tied around it, framed in green and gold scrollwork under a crown. The emblem came to Sardinia through the Crown of Aragon in the Middle Ages, and where it first came from is still argued. Europe used the word Moor for Black and North African people alike. Today the four heads still fly on Sardinia's own flag. Europe kept our faces in its heraldry for centuries.
